The better question is, how can I get me some of that Scrushy money?

And always remember, I am The Man.

I was trained as a journalist, but never worked in a traditional news setting. It is sad, but true... I came to the "dark side," in a desire for a larger paycheck and have never really regretted it. Now, I consider being a consumer of news as part of my job - I read the dailies, check the web and try to catch the local TV news. I believe in ethical and objective reporting, but as a PR professional, I was often faced the opposite. I am depressed that advertising dollars and profit margins often control what I consume. A recent story on this issue really ticked me off..., it was the Birmingham Times story(ies) in favor of Scrushy during his trial. When the story finally broke about the writer receiving money for her articles, it took 3-4 days for her lack of ethics to get any notice in print. Maybe the "hotness" of the Scrushy aspect took precedence, but it was the FIRST thing I thought when I read about it -- how can this woman call herself a journalist? And how can the Birmingham Times continue to tout itself as a viable, objective news source? Thanks for being independent... if I have issues with what you write, I know it wasn't because of "the man."

And thank YOU for being one that does it well. Your essay served as a good reminder that we all have unique qualities, desires, and personalities for what we do. When the stars align and we get to do that which we were 'meant' to do, it can be an awesome thing.

I have a question that is only partly on topic, concerning the future of journalism. I do not believe newspapers will go away, but I can very easily see both them and TV eclipsed by news services on the internet. Currently that is where I get most of my news.

If you want to comment some time on what effect this might have (or might be having) on journalism I'd be really interested in your opinion.

Thanks,

Kyle
