Nashville was a revelation when I went there – I had all seven buttons filled on the car stereo. that was 1994. Today, in 2010 in San Francisco, one of the great rock ‘n roll towns, I listen to maybe an hour of commercial radio a year – and 45 min of that is traffic reports on KCBS.

My DJ friend in Georgia nails it: no radio station can compete with your iPod.

I gave up on Birmingham radio years ago. I don’t listen to it at home and in the car I only listen to talk radio or books on tape.

But now I’ve got kids at the age where they listen and I’ve discovered that the songs are different but it’s the same old crap, if that makes sense. If I hear “Temperature” one more time…
