Time enough at last

By

To those who say they don’t have enough time, I say nonsense. I have to remind myself sometimes as well.

We make time for the things that are important to us.

tellingtime.jpgI almost never believe people who say they don’t have time, especially when they’re saying it about spending time with me. We all have the same 24 hours in day.

I’ve seen the busiest people make time for their priorities, whether it’s family, friends, “me time” whatever. And I’ve seen people with all the time in the world squander day after day into nothingness.

We create busy-ness. It’s partially about time management, but it’s more about setting priorities.

No priorities, no game plan. No game plan, no uses for your time.

I’m not saying every moment must be planned out. But let enough moments slip by unchecked and before you know it, you’re looking back wondering where all the time went.

I remind myself because I don’t like wasting time. I want a schedule that I rule ruthlessly. I want to set aside an hour for exercise, and two for reading.

But it hasn’t happened.

My bad habit is letting the urgent overtake the routine. Whatever is most pressing pushes out what has been already planned for days.

It happens frequently in newsrooms, but I managed to find the right balance.

I need to do it again.

I look back on my life sometimes and wish I had done some things earlier. Saved more, or bought a house, or learned to cook.

But regrets and worry — those things take time, too.

And I say, nonsense.
