I grew up in newspapers, it's such a strange world to be a part of. My parents still own three in North Carolina and I'm a bit sad with myself maybe that I have no desire to take them over once my parents retire, but the deadlines and high stress aren't for me.

I can thank the newspapers for allowing me to know nearly everyone in my hometown, for never needing to look very far for a summer job, for the rush that comes with accident chasing, and most likely for becoming a photographer. I was at a photojournalism conference during college when I met a wedding photographer who had switched from journalism at a major newspaper and that's when I knew I could actually make a career (not newspaper related) out of it. I still have my dad's old pentax that I learned on in for art class in high school and becoming a photographer for the newspaper was my first opportunity to learn on a dslr.

So I guess I mean thank you for the post, newspapers are always nostalgic for me. I hate to think what the next 10 years will bring for them.

Depends. I doubt any new daily newspaper will rise up to challenge it. Maybe a few suburban papers will nibble away at the edges, like in other markets.

The News already faces competition from, but not limited to: TV, radio, Internet, free papers, podcasts and apathy. We'll see how it shakes out, but I'm pulling for the News, as I do for most newspapers.

Is there any word that the Birmingham News will have any competition? Do you think it would be important?

I was just discussing with my wife the other night that I see the news world in for some serious changes over the next decade, and it concerns me. A lot of my comments will stem from that.
