Watch With Wade: Clear eyes

By

I love “Friday Night Lights.” I plan on reading the book, and I have seen the movie.

But on television, it is far and away outstanding work. “Friday Night Lights” chronicles the life of Dillon, Texas, and its beloved high school football team, the Panthers.

Season 3 is drawing to a close on NBC, having already aired on DirecTV. I watched last week’s episode, “Underdogs,” again, and plan on watching the season finale “Tomorrow Blues” one more time. They are that good.

Mild season 3 spoilers ahead. Avoid if you want to see season 3 without any hint as to what’s going on.

This clip from “Underdogs” is one of my favorite scenes from the season, maybe the entire run to date. After struggling with revisions and inspiration, Tyra reads her college application essay:

Two years ago, I was afraid of wanting anything. I figured wanting would lead to trying, and trying would lead to failure.

But now I find, I can’t stop wanting.

I want to fly somewhere first class. I want to travel to Europe on a business trip.

I want to get invited to the White House. I want to learn about the world. I want to surprise myself.

I want to be important. I want to be the best person I can be.

I want to define myself, instead of having others define me.

I want to win and have people be happy for me.

I want to lose and get over it.

I want to not be afraid of the unknown.

I want to grow up to be generous and big hearted, the way that people have been with me.

I want an interesting and surprising life.

It’s not that I think I’m gonna get all these things. I just want the possibility of getting them.

College represents the possibility, the possibility that things are going to change.

I can’t wait.
