13. A beautiful tribute on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The New York Philharmonic performs Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 2, Resurrection” with soprano Dorothea Röschmann, mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung and the New York Choral Artists.

Buy the concert DVD on Amazon.

12. An inspiring story from February 2006 about Jason McElwain. You never know who on your team can shine.

Buy Jason McElwain’s book on Amazon.

11. My interview for Scott Pierce’s WhyBHM series.

10. Could this focus on expensive poor patients in Camden, N.J., revolutionize American health care? “Frontline” reports on Dr. Hotspot, Jeffrey Brenner.

Buy the episode on iTunes.

9. My new nonprofit organization, the Alabama Social Media Association, shares videos of every educational meeting. At our inaugural event in March 2011, Ike Pigott discussed crisis management and social media.

8. I don’t think I understood the Occupy Wall Street movement till I saw this helpful segment …

7. We will never truly be a world power until we master the Japanese way of folding T-shirts.

6. My friend and business owner Carrie Rollwagen spent 2011 shopping locally. The results can be found on her site, Shop Small.

(She would most likely frown on all the affiliate links in this post, by the way.)

5. Willie Nelson covers Coldplay’s “The Scientist” for Chipotle’s nonprofit food group. (You probably will hate something about that last sentence.)

Full version …

Buy the song on Amazon or iTunes; 60 cents of each MP3 bought on iTunes goes to the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation.

4. Maybe the best episode of “Parks and Recreation” ever. “End of the World,” producer’s cut.

3. I was honored to kick off Ignite Birmingham in February with “Birmingham: Food Capital of the World.”

More in “How to Conquer Ignite: the Four Ps of Polish.”

2. My friend and Sports Illustrated reporter Lars Anderson wrote a phenomenal cover story on the aftermath of the April 27 tornadoes in Tuscaloosa. In addition, he shot some video during his reporting.

1. “Three guys, 44 days, 11 countries, 18 flights, 38,000 miles, an exploding volcano, two cameras and almost a terabyte of footage.” It wasn’t a season of “The Amazing Race” but a journey by Rick Mereki and friends to make three films, “Eat,” “Learn” and “Move,” seen below.

Buy the soundtrack song from iTunes.
